“Meaning in not something you stumble across, like the answer to a riddle or the prize in a treasure hunt.  Meaning is something you build into your life.  You build it out of your own past, out of your own affections and loyalties, out of the experience of humankind as it is passed on to you, out of your own talent and understanding, out of the things you believe in, out of the things and people you love, out of values for which you are willing to sacrifice something.  The ingredients are there.  You are the only one who can put them together into that unique pattern that will be your life.  Let it be a life that has dignity and meaning for you.  If it does, then the particular balance of success or failure is of less account.” – John Gardner, 1992

We think that it is easy to map out our life and discover what has meaning.  When we start to get close to this next life stage in our 50’s we discover it is not so easy.  We need to truly spend time reflecting and asking others to help us understand who we are but at the end of the day it will be our full responsibility to do so.

Here are some ideas for you:

  • Spend some time alone
  • Go and engage with others less fortunate and have a conversation about their challenges. It is not your role to fix it for them, but in having the conversation you may add value to both their lives and yours
  • Network with groups
  • Learn a new skill
  • Pray and read your bible
  • Rest and reflect
  • De-clutter and downsize and give stuff away especially if it is valuable to you
  • Discover your strengths and weaknesses

The journey of life and meaning takes a lifetime.  We can also be alive but not living.  How sad that is?

Make sure you take the road less travelled and discover the meaning attached to your unique life.
