Rainless with reindeer in Sweden

The travels of Norma and Rhys Rolfe in Europe continue, with Sweden surprising them by being more than forests and lakes.

3We have followed the beautiful spring flowers all the way from the UK, and the migrating birds.  In fact, we have followed many birds from Howick. Local houses are painted with red paint mined here for centuries are beautiful, something we will never forget.

People have been so friendly and helpful. While very few signs are written in English, almost everyone speaks it well. They tell us that it is embedded in them at school. The driving and road manners never cease to amaze us, and it is a pleasure driving this big vehicle 2here.

We have been very fortunate with the weather. It is a cold 14◦ but the sun is shining and there is very little rain. We do find 24 hours of daylight a little unsettling, as it seems to upset my metabolism. I am not sure what it would be like in winter. The cities, towns and farms are so neat and tidy, and people just seem to obey the rules, with very little presence of police or traffic cops. In fact, I don’t think we have seen one traffic cop. The roads are in good condition including the one we took to Lapland to see where the Sami live and the farm reindeer.

1While in Lapland, we visited Arvidsjuar where all winter road testing is done on new vehicles, trucks and tyres. The hotels are open in December, November and January and closed for the rest of the year. It is certainly a long way from anywhere to do this testing, but I suppose that is the idea.
